The type of arthritis named pseudogout is a type of arthritis that causes irritation and swelling in the joints. This can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, redness, warmth and tenderness, and in most instances only affects one joint at a time. There are some severe cases where it can affect several joints at the same time. The joint that is normally affected is the wrists or knees, but it can also affect the ankles, shoulders, knuckles, elbows and hips.
Pseudogout is similar to gout and this is a condition that can cause arthritis, as this condition is caused by calcium pyrophosphate crystals, unlike gout. Gout is caused by monosodium urate crystals.
This condition is similar to gout in the type of symptoms and the parts of the body it affects, pseudogout affects larger joints causing severe inflammation. This is a condition that can last day or weeks, unlike gout that can last for weeks or months. Pseudogout when affecting the joints can cause severe pain, swelling, inflammation and warmth in the affected area.
The cystals that cause pseudogout differ from those that cause gout structurally and are what causes the irritation and pain when small crystals form in the joint. |
