The treatment of cervical arthritis depends on the extent of the disease and the severity of the symptoms. Some simple self care measures can help manage symptoms. You can massage the muscles of your neck and shoulder or take a warm bath to relax muscles. There are several other non surgical options available for the treatment of cervical arthritis. Mild cases of cervical arthritis can be treated by neck exercises, rest and pain medication. Non steroidal anti inflammatory medications may be prescribed to help deal with pain and inflammation. The doctor may also refer the patient to a physiotherapist who can recommend some mild exercise to strengthen the muscles of the neck and shoulder. In some cases, the patient may have to wear a neck collar to rest the neck and soothe irritation of the nerves. Applying a cold compress on the neck can also help relieve pain and irritation. Injection of corticosteroid medications can also help reduce pain and inflammation. Other alternative treatments for cervical arthritis include ultrasound and whirlpool treatments, acupressure, acupuncture. In some cases, the patient may be hospitalized for two weeks with rest and traction on the neck. This will help reduce pressure on the cervical nerves. In severe cases of cervical arthritis, surgery may be recommended.
