There are four traditional style formulae of Chinese herbs used in the treatment of arthritis. These are as follows: Shuguan Wenjing Chongji, Wangbi Chongji, Fengshi Xiandan and Shuguan Qingluo Chongji. The first formula Wangbi chongji was invented by famous physician Jiao Shude. Whenever there is excessive pain to the patient, it indicates that the channels in which blood flows are obstructed by external pathogenic factors. The blood stasis and phlegm meld together and this further blocks the flow, thereby giving rise to severe pain. According to the Chinese formulae, if the kidney is warmed up at this time, then the blockage can be cleared in order to relieve the pain. The herb stephania is used widely in China for the purpose of treating arthritis. However, it contained a source material of the species Aristolochia and thus contained aristolochic acid. This substance possesses the risk of causing renal damage as well as renal failure. Therefore, this herb has recently been banned in the market. Other Chinese herbs like clematis, sinomenium and other herbs in the Aristolochiaceae family have also been removed from the market. The main benefit of using the Chinese herbs is that they provide certain other advantages besides relieving the pain. The commercial drugs do not provide these benefits because they are completely aimed at relieving the pain caused due to inflammation only.
