Diagnosing Bursitis

Bursitis like other types of arthritis need to be diagnosed in order to get the proper treatment, this begins with a physical examination and a discussion with the physician about medical history. It is important for all medical conditions and medications to be discussed, which enables the physician or specialist understand what other problems or medications might present a problem when prescribing medication for bursitis.
X-rays are one of the most common tests the physician might order to verify this is the type of arthritis condition they are dealing with, because bone fractures can often present the same type of symptoms.  The X-ray can help to identify the swelling of the bursa sacs in the joints like the elbow or knee, or it can help detect olecranon bursitis.
There can be other types of complications with bursitis that might be detected during the diagnosis that will need to be treated, like infections. The infection can have many of the same symptoms as bursitis, infection can be common if the bursa sacs near the skin are inflamed, when they are the bursa sacs that are deep under the skin infection rarely occurs.

The symptoms of infection often appear as redness and warmth on the skin, which can also be symptoms of bursitis, however fever, chills and other symptoms of infection might be present.
