Glucosamine is found in the joints and that too in abundant quantities. It is believed that it stimulates the cartilage formation and plays a vital role in joint repair. And based on this theory health experts suggest glucosamine therapy for patients for arthritis.
In most of the cases glucosamine is administered in combination with chondroitin sulfate. And this combination therapy works towards repairing cartilage damage and maintain viscosity of the joints.
In United States and in many other parts of the world there are millions of people who suffer from arthritis. But in the United States glucosamine supplements are quite common and popular in treatment of arthritis. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act passed in 1994 by Congress allow the marketing of glucosamine supplements. However, these products are not yet approved by FDA. As far as studies on glucosamine supplements are considered there are varied results. Some studies show that the glucosamine supplements were effective on majority of the patients of osteoarthritis. But in a few studies the results were not that effective. And thus due to variations in the results, it was difficult to make apt conclusion about the effects and results of glucosamine. However, most of the doctors believe that glucosamine supplements are worth trying once provided the quality of the product is too good. |
