One of the major types of children arthritis is the oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis also referred to as pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or simply oligoarthritis. It is the mildest of all forms of juvenile arthritis and it affects four or less joints in the body for duration of not more than six months. Generally, the joints which can easily be affected are the ones in the hip, wrists, knees, ankles and to some extent it can affect the joints in the fingers as well.
Here are the common symptoms of oligoarthritis;
- Bearable pain
- Inflammation
- Stiffness on the affected areas
- Uneven growth of bones
In rare cases, it can also affect the eyes by in a form of swelling which can be diagnosed to be iritis or even uveitis. However, people may tend not to notice these symptoms thinking that arthritis only affects the joints and the lower extremities of the body. The bad news is, this type of arthritis may lead to blindness because the symptoms in the eyes are left untreated.
The progression of this type may lead to just two conditions, the persistent and the extended. Persistent oligoarthritis is a form which shows mild symptoms of the disease but consistent in nature. Only four or even less joints are affected. On the other, the extended oligoarthritis can usually be found in more severe form which may affect five or even more joints in the body. |
