Physiotherapy works against arthritis by improving the movement of the patient. It also focuses on reduction of pain, strengthening the power of the muscles and helps the patient in not being dependent up on anyone else. Three types of treatments are applied in physiotherapy in order to treat arthritis: thermal treatment, electrical treatments and physical treatments. The thermal treatments work by generating heat in the tissues of the body. The heat is mostly directed towards the superficial parts of the body. Some of the treatments used in this include wax baths, heat lamps, hot packs, short wave diathermy and micro wave diathermy. The electrical treatments work by producing electrical stimulation in the tissues of the body of the patient. This is quite helpful for the patients who have chronic arthritis as well as acute arthritis. The electrical treatment proves to be more efficient in treating the muscle spasm, swelling as well as pain in the patients of arthritis. The physical treatment procedure involves the ice therapy as well as the ultrasonic waves of sound. Physiotherapy also involves certain exercises, hydro therapy, manual therapy as well as occupational therapy for relief from pain as well as stiffness. Manipulation and mobilization techniques are applied to the soft tissues to help to restore the total movement of the patent.
