The definite cause of the progression of fibromyalgia is still unidentified. But medical researches have manifested some significant factors affecting the formation of such condition. This is with the inclusion of incomplete hormonal growth secretion, heredity, hypodopaminergia, abnormal metabolism of serotonin, abnormalities of cerebrospinal fluid, psychological and stress factors. Among the known risk factors, the stress factor, heredity and psychological factors appear to be the most common.
- Stress factor -- this is characterized by relentless weakness and posttraumatic stress disorder. Frequent disclosure to stress may often result to the alteration of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal functionalities, widely known as the HPA axis. This then would result to the augmented progression of fibromyalgia condition, later on.
- Heredity -- this denotes family history, which means that fibromyalgia can be an inherited disease. This is true since majority, if not all types of arthritis can be acquired from genes. In the case of fibromyalgia, gene polymorphism appears to be the apparent link.
- Psychological factor -- these are often characterized by major depression disorder or MDD. Medical researches found out a broad connection between fibromyalgia and MDD based on the visible symptoms, psychological attributes and medications. Because of this, a thought of fibromyalgia as an associated condition with psychosomatic disorder was also formulated.
