One of the most popular myths surrounding arthritis is that is affects only old people. This is not really the case. As a matter of fact, many arthritis patients are below the age of 65. A form of arthritis called juvenile arthritis can affect even infants and toddlers. Some people believe that arthritis is triggered by cold, moist weather. Weather is not related arthritis in any manner. Arthritis is caused when the cartilage that separates bones wears away. However, warmth can have a soothing effect on arthritis. This is why people with arthritis feel better in warm climates. Another notion is that arthritis is a disease that can be cured. This is not so. It is chronic condition and the wear and tear of bones and joints affected by the disease is not reversible. Treatment aims to manage pain and improve the patient’s quality of life. Some people believe that certain foods can cause arthritis whereas others can help prevent it. So far, studies have not shown any definite link between arthritis and diet. If a person with arthritis takes some food which he is allergic to, it can cause arthritis to flare. Arthritis can flare at times and go into remission at times. This leads many people to think that the disease is in their imagination. Some people feel that arthritis patients should not be physically active as this can aggravate pain. While these patients may require some help, they can engage in mild to moderate physical activities without much difficulty.
